Final cut!

After Effects

For the titles of our introduction I created them on Adobe After Effects for the PC. I got the idea from a video i saw on the internet explaining how to create some of your own titles on After Effects.

I found After Effects a very specialist program to use a at times the many tools can become complecated and see to do much of the same thing. However with some well layed out instructions with what each tool does I got more to grips with the Adobe product.

After the initial trial with After Effects I went about and made the titles using the video i found as a base of my design. However unlike the originol I didnt add as many effect as they had done and changed some of the properties of animation so it was more of my own.

I will also attempt to create some logos with After Effects which can also be added to the begining of the introduction so it doesnt just jump into the film as films rarely just jump into the film without any logos from funding companies or the company who owns the film.

Sound and Music Choices.

After we put our pieces of clip together we had to make decisions on what sounds to add or take away from the clips we were using.

Diagetic: In the first scene with th hand dialing on the phone we decided to take all sound out of the scene that was "Diagetic". We have done this as we found it didnt make a good mix with the non diagetic sound we used later on and it was best to take all sound out of this first scene.

Diagetic sound is returned to the scene with the sound of the man talking and walking across the floorbards in the next series of scenes with the villain present. However in the scene where their is an establishing shot on the street outside we took away the noise of the traffic for three reasons. The first was to create suspence from the lack of noise and to grab the audiances attention. Second was because it was meant to be at the point of view from the caller who wouldnt be able to hear the outside traffic. Lastly it was also to single out the voice of the person on the other end of the phone so the audiance can her wat he is saying.

Diagetic sound in the form of the person on the other end of the phone was added inbetween most of the title scenes as this was to give those scenes some form of sound other then just the moving image to keep the story going even whilst the titles rolled past.

Non Diagetic: We made use of non diagetic sound so the clip wasn't completely silent as this ruined any tention creaed by the charctor speaking and doesnt build up any effect with the beggining scene where took sound out completely.

Through the whole clip we used a sound of static to tackle the complete silence of some o the scenes so we turned the colume f this sound very low so it created an atmoshpere to start with. In the beggining scene we also added a little tune which sounded quite dark to fit with the clip we had already composed and also set the mood for a dark film which is associated with both Thirllers and Horrors.

Other non diagetic sound we used was on the main title of "Cold Calling" where we added the sound of a dialtone being scrambled to give the impression of either a hung phone or prehaps something more (creates mystory for the audiance as to what happened to the person on the other end of the phone) and then a sound which was called "Thunder roll" to give the title much more livelyness and ot make them be more hard hitting with the sound and we think gives more of a hard hitting impression on the audiance.

Risk assesment

As we are only using one location we have made sure the area is clear of many hazzordous things:
-no chemicles being used in any scenes so are clear from our location.
-any wires have been removed or hidden to avoid tripping.
-all other objects that could prove to be a trip hazzard have been removed.
-no items hanging from the cieling (such as light) that were low enough to hit anyone on set.
-all equipment was out of the way of our actors line of path.
-area was cool enough that it wouldnt overheat the equipment giving the risk of fire.
-no smoke/matches/lighters or other substance that is flammible was on set and no flames were created.

mind map

as we decided to go with the thriller genre we had to come up with a convincing plot and characters for the introduction.

Horror or thriller?

Horror: a horror might prove difficult to seem realistic however locations could be fairly easy such as a forest with a "shrooms" style of horror. If we could make it a convincing horror it would look realy interesting and with good results. However introductions for horrors are usualy quite normal and in some aspect boaring and we dont really want to make a boaring introduction or one that people would mistake as a thriller.

Thriller: a thriller location would also be easy t find as it could be done on the street,in a room or anywhere else we could think of. We also found that a thriller oppening could be easier to achieve as unlike with a horror we dont need to attempt to scare the audiance just create a mysterious setup for the rest of the film.

Choice: The reason we rejected the idea for a horror is we found it can be hard to make a horror lo convincing and hard to think of a character who could be used in a horror that we have the means to create (we couldnt create the new freddie from nightmare on elmstreet as an example) and we found the characters for a thriller were more realistiic for us as we found with thrillers even the most normal looking person can be evil and out for world domination.

Murder,revenger or physcological thriller?

Murder: could be about a serial killer whose been killing a number of people, the police and detectives later find out all the victims were linked to one important person and try to predict and pan the mans movements, before they know it the killer is infiltrating the detectives operation base and traps them inside.

Revenge: inspiration from films like Die Hard 4.0 after the main characters daughter is kidknapped. insted of kindknaped the main characters vengeful reasons could be behind family members being killed best friends beig killed by people for gains of wealth. Film would follow the character linking the clues to find the killers hideout to a showdown at the end  (high action film)

Physcological: again inspired by another film but this time Phonebooth ,however insted stuck inside a phonebooth the caller is calling more then one person forcing the to perform his ill deeds such as murder, theft or other crimes otherwise he will use blackmail or even kill his victims. However the plot of the film takes a different turn as one of the victim decides to go after the caller.

Choice? we decided to go with the physcological thriller as the introduction would be easier to stage as the murder would prove difficult to act out convincingly and the revenge might seem a slow start with a lack of anything to hook the viewers. However with the physcological thriller we could start with the caller killing of a ictim before calling the main character so would set the scene and give the audiance information about some of the plot of the sotry line without revealing who the caller is.

Male or Female?

Caller role

Male: quite an evil looking character long hair looks scruffy - resoning behind this is because a scruffy looking character could look like they've been planning thier evil plan for some time (males with long hair gives the impression of either a person who wants to style long hair or a person whos had more important things going on. Long hair + scruffy we would hope would equl the latter outcome of the impression of our male character villain.

Female: a femail character i think would be hard to make a convincing serious evil caller, however i think it could easily be possible if we could find the right actress with a very good authorotive voice and with quite a dominant leader role and personality being displayed in the character. I think the femaile character would have quite straight hair to show unlike the male character type she takes care of herself but also shows she means buisness. Personaly she would wear dark clothing again to show her attitude to buisness and that doesnt take anything from anyone.

victims role

Male: as thier ould be more then one victim in the film the one im depicting is the victim from the introduction as the vitcim wont be seen but heard its all about the voice for this actor. If the actor wa smale he would have to have a scared tone not someone whose confident with themselves and just wants to go about doing thier day to day buisness. However on the other hand a voice which is confident but wary would also work as it would give the impression of an important person the caller has called and then the seriousness of the boffense the caller blackmails him with as he would be confident to try and oppose the caller.

Female: A female voice i think would have to be the same s the male as it could be either a confident or scared role. i would only b e able to decide on confident or scared style of voice when i see who i use as the actor in the filming (or recording as the case may be).

Choice: we decded to use a male voice and a mail caller as the we could achieve the strong caller role with a scruffy quite insane caller which would make a more interesting introduction and a voice which is undecided of either a confident or scared voice role.

evaluation of film opening depending on genre

Using the film opening from “the lord of the rings Fellowship of the ring” I shall contrast its opening with “the Simpsons Movie” and discuss how the conventions and camera shots help to draw in both of their targets audiences, which for the Lord of the rings film (lotr) would be the fans of the films and other fantasy or adventure film fans, or even those who enjoy Peter Jacksons films. Whereas the Simpsons Movie audience would be those who enjoy the tv series, others who enjoy an American style comedy, cartoons or fans of Matt Groening’s work (such as Futerama).

When the introduction to lotr starts we don’t have any actual video shots just a black screen with the opening titles being rolled over, as the introduction continues a narrative is used to start telling a back-story for te rest of the film. I think the narrative is used to explain to those who are not fans of the books how the events after the introduction have come to pass, and to those who are fans to remind them of the events that have happened a couple of thousand years before the films setting, so I think this helps to draw in fans by starting to tell them the story. Contrasting this with the Simpsons movie which starts with a humorous series of long shots and close ups of a cartoon that the Simpsons watch called itchy and scratchy, and then reverts to Homer making a fool of himself in the middle of a cinema with a long shot of the cinema screen with homer in mid shot. I think this is an unconventual way for a film such as this to introduce itself because it is unlike the introduction to the tv series which starts with the opening title. I think this differs from lotr opening which shows the title very early in the introduction.

Secondly after the first title sequence in lotr it cuts to a series of long shots which show a starting of a war in “middle earth” and uses a series of long shots to show the extremity of the fight and to get the amount of action in shot as possible. Also it uses mid shots to show certain special characters. I thin this is a very conventional way of portraying a war if we look at a film such as Brave heart it also uses a series of long and mid shots to portray the shot, so I believe it is a conventional way to show a fight. This is different compared to the Simpsons movie which after the first small sequence cuts to the title openings like in the TV series however seems to change some of the sequence with new shots such as Mr. burns in a mid shot. I think the shots used in the Simpsons movie introduction are different to that of the lotr because they are both trying to capture a completely different view of the area, lotr is trying to capture a background story of a war and so uses conventional long shots, but on the other hand the Simpsons movie is focusing on a few select characters in the introduction so only uses more mid shot and close ups because it does not need to show such an array of characters as the other film does.

I think these shots used such as with lotr the long shots draw in the audience because if the audience target is those who love action the prospect of a war fills that  and by using long shots you see much more of the action. And to die hard fans of the book the mid shots used on the main characters appeals to them because they get to see who plays their character and how there role has been portrayed by Peter Jackson. Where as on the other hand the first shots used of Itchy and Scratchy daw in the audience because it is a recurrence within the tv shows which has been bought to the big screen and so draws in its audience, so by using the mid shots to portray there hate for each other it creates humour for the comedy addicts. Therefore I believe that the shots are specifically used by both introductions to draw in their audiences, and they are different only because they are a different genre of film and both have different target audiences.

In conclusion I think that both films use different shots of the camera to draw in their audiences because of there very different genres. Also I think that the conventions of the introductions are fairly similar to other films of their genre with lotr being similar to a fight in brave heart (however not the introduction of brave heart). I believe that the introductions do very well to draw in the target audiences they are looking for by the use of the shots and they way they start the introductions.

Plot of film opening

when a cold caller starts calling people of significance it appears he's not trying to sell goods. The cold caller is calling his victim for assistance in horrible deeds with the use fo blackmail. His blackmailed victims must do as he says otherwise they face the truth of thier crimes exposed or worse even death.
